On Monday 19 April, the German Greens announced the nomination of Annalena Baerbock as candidate for chancellorship in the September German Federal elections.

The European Greens and green parties across Europe will strongly support Annalena’s race to become the next chancellor of Germany. A Green chancellor is a unique chance for Germany and for Europe to build back greener, fairer and better. Building back greener after the pandemic will be the key challenge ahead of us all: With Annalena, the German Greens are entering the race with a candidate who embodies this perfectly, who stands for renewal, not status quo.

Evelyne Huytebroeck, co-chair of the European Green Party comments:

“The challenges ahead for Germany and Europe are deeply interlinked: A post-covid recovery fully embedded in the ever-more pressing necessary action to fight the climate crisis. With Annalena as a candidate for chancellor, the German Greens are entering the campaign with a woman that couldn’t be more suited for the job!”

Thomas Waitz, co-chair of the European Green Party and MEP, adds:

“Future economic prosperity in Germany and in Europe requires a deep transition. Annalena and the German Greens are in the best position to shake the status quo and engage the country in this transition.                                                                                    With the team of Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck as leading candidates for the elections, the German Greens are sending a strong message for change. There couldn’t be a better team to stand for the necessary renewal, a different way of doing politics, and the forward-looking change the German Greens will bring to Germany and Europe.”
