“No deal is not an option for the EPP. But never has the risk of a disorderly Brexit been higher," stated the EPP President Joseph Daul.

The European People’s Party (EPP) leaders met today in Brussels ahead of the European Council. Brexit, the upcoming elections in Finland and Spain, as well as the preparations for the European elections topped the meeting’s agenda.

“No deal is not an option for the EPP. But never has the risk of a disorderly Brexit been higher. Any postponement of the departure date of the United Kingdom from the European Union should be based on a precise scope, on a clear perspective and it should strictly respect European legislation, including the legislation for organising the European Parliament elections, 23-26 May 2019. The EPP is committed to an orderly departure of the UK from the EU respecting all aspects of European legislation,” stated the EPP President Joseph Daul after the Summit.

The upcoming elections in both Finland and Spain were discussed during the meeting. EPP leaders wish the best of luck to Petteri Orpo and Kokoomus and Pablo Casado and Partido Popular.

“I am convinced that Kokoomus and Partido Popular represent the best option for the people of Finland and the people of Spain. I wish our EPP member parties strong electoral success for the upcoming general elections in Finland and Spain. Petteri Orpo and Pablo Casado are very strong voices at European level and highly respected leaders within the EPP,” said EPP President.

EPP Lead Candidate Manfred Weber gave a report on his meetings with European citizens in the framework of his pan-European Listening Tour. The concerns of the citizens heard over the course of the Listening Tour will be addressed in the EPP Manifesto, which will be launched next month.

“The EPP is united in this campaign. We will present a common view for the future of the European Union. Our goal is to win the European elections and ensure Manfred Weber is elected as the President of the European Commission,” said EPP President Joseph Daul.

The next EPP Summit will take place on 9 May 2019 in Sibiu, co-hosted by Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis.
