The EPP Group welcomes the news of the arrest of a person of interest in relation to the assassination of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The legal process should now ensure that justice is served, without further delay.

Speaking from the EPP Congress in Zagreb, EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber MEP said: “I spoke to Partit Nazzjonalista leader Adrian Delia to reiterate my backing for Partit Nazzjonalista’s and civil society’s calls for political responsibility to be shouldered in Malta. Of course the legal process must be respected but this is distinct from political responsibility. This scandal cannot be allowed to spread further. For justice to take place, political action should be taken immediately. Politicians suspected of being involved in corrupt dealings with the suspected mastermind of the journalist’s murder should shoulder political responsibility immediately.”

“The EPP Group will continue to monitor developments in Malta and call for political action to be taken”, he concluded.
