The European Commission has referred Poland to the European Court of Justice to protect the independence of the Polish Supreme Court.

“This move to refer Poland to the European Court of Justice is the right choice by the Commission. It demonstrates that in the EU the rule of law is not optional. To Polish citizens the EU thus sends the message, that we are ready to support them in defending their rights against their own authoritarian government,” said European Green Party co-chairs Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni Commenting on the news.

“The European Union has repeatedly expressed its intention to keep all channels of communication with the PiS government open. Poland would do well not to back itself into a corner and instead seek a solution-oriented approach. That would start with a clear and unambiguous Polish pledge to honour the decision the ECJ will make on this issue,” pointed out.
