The European Union’s draft guidelines for the Brexit trade talks were presented by EU Council President Donald Tusk during his visit to Luxembourg on March 7.

Unveiling a six-page document, Tusk appeared alongside Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who said Brexit would bring “no winners”. He also reaffirmed the EU’s stance that there could be “no cherry-picking” for the UK of EU advantages.

As reported by Euronews online, the EU guidelines warn that the UK’s intention to leave the single market and the customs union will lead to “negative economic consequences”.

Tusk’s main points include a common fight against terrorism and cooperation in defence and foreign affairs. The UK is also invited to take part in EU research, education and culture programmes. There will also be a Free Trade Agreement.

Tusk tweeted: “EU27 wants UK as close friend & partner and will enter talks on future with open, positive mind. But given UK red lines only an FTA is possible. It will be the first FTA in history to loosen, not strengthen economic ties. Drifting apart is essence of #Brexit”.
