Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has submitted himself to a confidence vote in parliament without any assurance that the majority of lawmakers will vote in his favour.
Babis, who ran a eurosceptic and anti-immigration campaign with his Action of Dissatisfied Citizens (ANO), can count on the support of his own parliamentary group. But this is only 78 of the 200 seats in the chamber, and the Communists, with 15.
Meanwhile, seven of the eight opposition parties have asked that the investiture vote be postponed until after a final decision is made on the police request to strip Babis of his parliamentary immunity in order for him to be investigated for allegedly misusing European Union subsidy money in a way that directly benefited one of his enterprises.
As reported by the Agencia EFE, Babis has been dubbed the Czech Donald Trump. He is the second richest man in the Czech Republic. He owns two national newspapers, three TV channels and two radio stations.
