“In the run-up to the European elections, we must focus on our core strengths of teamwork and solidarity," the new S&D Group President, Udo Bullmann, said.

Following an internal campaign, the S&D Group elected tonight with a strong majority Udo Bullmann as its new Group President. This election took place following the resignation of former Group President Gianni Pittella after his election to the Italian Senate in February 2018. Udo Bullmann will lead the second largest political group in the House into the upcoming European elections in May 2019 and till the end of this parliamentary term.

Udo Bullmann will give a press conference this morning, 21 March 2018 at 10.30h in the press room of the European Parliament ANNA POLITKOVSKAYA – PHS 0A50.

He will lay down his progressive vision for the future of Social Democracy in Europe and will answer to questions from journalists.

Commenting on the outcome of the election, the new S&D Group President, Udo Bullmann, said:

“I am very grateful for being elected as new President of the S&D Group. I am proud to have received this overwhelming support from my comrades. From this result grows a great responsibility. I also thank my competitor, Kathleen Van Brempt, for the exciting and fair election campaign.

“In the run-up to the European elections, we must focus on our core strengths of teamwork and solidarity. Only as a united movement, will we be able to meet the challenges of our time. Central to this is the fight against inequalities of all kinds – whether economic, social, territorial or between the genders. The development of a fair migration agenda, proposals for fair global trade and measures for a sustainable environment must also be the focus of our work.

“The S&D Group is a unique community of extraordinary people – a diverse and united group of engaged women and men from different generations and national backgrounds. I firmly believe that together we can bring about the fundamental change that our societies so desperately need. This requires a renewed social democracy, committed to the sustainable development of our societies. I am convinced that our group can provide the decisive impulses for this.”
