The outcome of Italian elections is “worrying”, according to the European Network Against Racism (ENAR).

“The progress made by parties promoting xenophobia in the Italian election reflects a deeply worrying trend: politicians across Europe are scapegoating migrants and minorities and spreading fear to gain votes, instead of proposing real solutions to improve living conditions across society,” said Claudia Marà, a board member of ENAR.

“The racist shooting targeting Black people in Macerata during the election campaign resulted in further fear mongering instead of condemnation of racist violence,” she added. “Between 2010 and 2017, most hate crimes were racially motivated. People of colour are likely to be even less safe if the future Italian government continues on this track.

“Especially in the run-up to the 2019 EU elections, we need courageous politicians who stand up to racism and offer solutions for a better future.”
