On 6 July, the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) commenced its deployment of 14 long-term observers (LTOs) to monitor the general and regional elections in Guyana across all 10 regions of the country. The EU EOM employs a well-established methodology for comprehensive, long-term nationwide observation, which ensures a balanced and thorough analysis of the entire electoral process.

The observers are organised into multinational teams of two. They will closely monitor key aspects of the elections at the regional level. Each team will engage with essential electoral stakeholders, including voters, election officials, political parties, civil society representatives, and members of the media throughout all regions. Their findings will enhance the analysis conducted by the EU EOM core team located in the capital, Georgetown.

“Long-term observers are the backbone of our mission. Their work on the ground will provide essential information and insights, forming the basis of our impartial and fact-based assessment of the electoral process,” said Deputy Chief Observer Vania Anguelova.

Before their deployment, the long-term observers received extensive briefings covering the electoral process, political environment, legal framework, as well as the media and social context in Guyana. As the election day approaches, the mission will be augmented by an additional 20 short-term observers. Together with the LTOs and other team members, they will oversee the voting process, the counting of ballots, and the tabulation of results.

This mission has been deployed at the invitation of the Government of Guyana. It is led by Chief Observer Robert BiedroÅ„, who announced the mission’s launch at a press conference in Georgetown on 1 August 2025. The EU EOM will present its preliminary findings in a public statement two days following the election, followed by a final report that will include recommendations for enhancing the electoral process, which will be published after the conclusion of the entire electoral procedure.
