The European Commission has called an emergency meeting next week in light of Hungary and Slovakia’s recent decision to suspend diesel supplies to Ukraine. Representatives from Hungary, Slovakia, and Croatia will attend this meeting. The actions of Hungary and Slovakia also involve Croatia, as Hungary has formally requested the European Commission to facilitate the transit of seaborne Russian oil through Croatia’s Adriatic pipeline. This pipeline, managed by the JANAF oil transport state company, is one of the most critical oil pipelines in Europe; however, Croatia has declined this request.

In a press release issued today, JANAF Plc emphasised its commitment to partnership and reliability as core business values. The company’s activities help secure a consistent crude oil supply to Central European nations, particularly Hungary and Slovakia. Currently, a substantial quantity of non-Russian crude oil is being transported through JANAF’s pipeline for the MOL Group, a Hungarian multinational oil and gas company. Additionally, three tankers carrying non-Russian oil for MOL Group are in transit to the OmiÅ¡alj Terminal in Croatia.

The press release underscores that tankers intended for MOL Group are routinely received at JANAF’s OmiÅ¡alj Terminal, where the oil is then delivered through the JANAF pipeline to the Hungarian border for transfer to the partner company.

“Given these circumstances, claims that the mentioned countries would be on the verge of fuel supply disruptions are entirely unfounded,” specifies the company.

“There was no need to tap into their reserves since oil transport via the JANAF pipeline towards MOL’s refineries is being carried out continuously and without delays.”

JANAF continues to function as a vital energy hub, not only for Croatia but also for the broader region, ensuring supply security for all countries along the pipeline route. While prior assessments have validated that JANAF’s capacity can adequately fulfil the crude oil requirements of both Hungary and Slovakia, the company appreciates that MOL Group has accepted its proposal for additional testing, which will involve representatives from the European Commission.

“We hope that in the coming meeting, MOL Group will accept JANAF’s proposition for the following testing to be carried out continuously over a period of one month and for the quantity of 1 million tonnes of crude oil.”

“JANAF remains the only secure non-Russian oil supply route for Central Europe and we are certain that our long-term partner will confirm this by accepting the upcoming testing results,” concludes the press release.
