Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will examine the innovative strategies adopted by Finland and Sweden in addressing hybrid threats, including disinformation, foreign interference, and electoral influence.
The Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS) will visit Helsinki and Stockholm, engaging with government officials, media representatives, and experts in security and defence. The discussions will focus on the national approaches these countries use to counter information manipulation, cyber threats, and other forms of external interference.
Recognised as frontrunners in responding to hybrid threats, Finland and Sweden have developed comprehensive measures to counter sabotage, attacks on critical infrastructure, espionage, and the strategic use of migrant flows. This mission aims to acquire valuable insights from these Nordic nations to bolster societal resilience, informed by their “whole of society” model.
The findings from this mission will significantly contribute to the EUDS Committee’s work and play a key role in shaping the forthcoming European Democracy Shield proposal.
The delegation will be led by Mika Aaltola (EPP, FI) and include Lena Düpont (EPP, DE), Evin Incir (S&D, SE), and Tomas Tobé (EPP, SE) as an accompanying member.
