On 4 June, the Embassy of Latvia in the Netherlands hosted a discussion titled “Invisible in War, Resilient in Peace: Reality for Women with Disabilities in Crisis.” This event aimed to highlight the challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities during armed conflicts, natural disasters, and other crises and to emphasise their inclusion in international policymaking.
Panellists included Gunta Anča, Chairperson of the Latvian Umbrella Body for Disability Organisations SUSTENTO, Elif Borucu-Çalinalti, a civil society activist and mother of a child with a disability and Daria Kukurika, head of the Ukrainian NGO “League of Strong.” They shared insights on the vulnerabilities of women with disabilities, particularly regarding access to shelters and evacuation plans during crises.
Gunta Anča noted that women with disabilities are often overlooked and more likely to face violence. Elif Borucu-Çalinalti emphasised the importance of timely preparations for crises, including the involvement of women with disabilities in crisis communication and planning. Daria Kukurika emphasised that these women are not just vulnerable; they are capable leaders who advocate for change in their communities.
The event was part of Latvia’s campaign for a seat on the United Nations Security Council, which Latvia achieved on 3 June for the term from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027. Membership will be essential for advancing Latvia’s foreign policy and promoting security through multilateral diplomacy.
