Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced plans to introduce a discharge petition to force a vote to terminate President Donald Trump‘s tariffs on Canada.
“I applaud Senator Tim Kaine for leading the bipartisan effort to reverse Trump’s baseless use of ‘national emergency’ powers to justify sweeping tariffs on Canada,” said Rep. Meeks.
“Our neighbour to the north is one of our closest allies and trading partners, yet Trump has unilaterally launched a trade war that hurts American families, manufacturers, automakers, farmers, and small businesses. These tariffs are causing needless suffering on both sides of our long-peaceful border and must be repealed,” emphasised Rep. Meeks.
“Despite Republican attempts to block my privileged resolution last month through a procedural move, I am exploring options, including through a discharge petition, to force a vote on this major issue. It’s time for my Republican colleagues to be clear on where they stand: with their constituents or with their would-be king, Donald J. Trump.”
