FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Wednesday that Iran is expected to participate in the World Cup, despite the ongoing conflict with the United States. During his remarks at CNBC’s Invest in America Forum, Infantino highlighted the significance of Iran’s involvement, particularly in light of the uncertainty caused by recent US and Israeli airstrikes in the region.

“The Iranian team is confirmed to participate,” Infantino stated. “We are hopeful that by the time of the tournament, the situation will have stabilized, as this would be beneficial for all involved. It is essential that Iran participates, as they represent their people, they have qualified for the event, and the players are eager to compete.”

Infantino also shared his recent experience meeting the Iranian national team in Antalya, Turkey, expressing admiration for their talent. “I had the opportunity to observe their training,” Infantino said, adding that he found them to be a skilled team with a strong desire to compete. “It is crucial that sports be regarded as separate from political matters.”

While acknowledging the complexities surrounding the relationship between sports and politics, Infantino remarked, “OK, we don’t live on the moon, we live on planet Earth,” Infantino said. “But you know if there is nobody else that believes in building bridges and in keeping them, you know, intact and together, well we are doing that job.”

The United States will co-host the World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico. Iran is scheduled to play two group-stage matches in Inglewood, California, and one in Seattle. The current conflict has led to questions regarding Iran’s participation, accompanied by mixed statements from the Iranian government and soccer officials. Additionally, US President Donald Trump has expressed concerns regarding the safety of the Iranian team and has advised them to reconsider attending the tournament.
