China has expressed its opposition to any interference in Iran’s internal affairs, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told journalists on Monday. This statement was a direct response to remarks from US President Donald Trump, who indicated that Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader would “not last very long” without his approval.
Guo emphasised the importance of respecting Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity during a briefing. He also called for an immediate cessation of military operations and advocated for a return to dialogue to avoid further escalation of tensions.
On Sunday, Iran’s Assembly of Experts appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the new supreme leader following recent US-Israeli attacks that commenced on 28 February. In response to inquiries regarding this appointment, Guo noted that Beijing has “taken note of the reports” and assessed that the decision was made “in accordance with the constitution.”
