The European Commission has endorsed the inclusion of the fur animal welfare programme WelFur in the database of European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) as self-regulation.

The recognition follows an official multi-step process managed by the EESC and the European Commission which evaluates programmes against principles such as openness, good faith, legal compliance, monitoring and evaluation.

Having passed all requirements, WelFur has become the first animal welfare industry self-regulation listed in the database and is described as “a science-based, practical and reliable on-farm assessment…to monitor and improve welfare”.

This is not the first time the European Commission officials highlight the commitment of the fur sector to animal welfare. In 2017 EU official from the Animal Welfare Unit pointed out that WelFur is the right way forward and other livestock sectors should follow the lead.

The WelFur system is currently being implemented at some 3,500 mink and fox farms in Europe.
