Moldovan business magnate Vladimir Plahotniuc has been extradited to Moldova following his detention in Greece on a warrant related to a significant fraud case amounting to $1 billion. NewsMaker.md reported that he arrived at Chisinau International Airport on Thursday, where officials in dark uniforms escorted him. Plahotniuc, who was wearing a white shirt and a dark cap, had his hands restrained and was promptly transferred to a vehicle.
Upon his arrival, the Justice Minister, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, announced that Plahotniuc would be held in solitary confinement at Prison No. 13 in Chisinau “for security reasons and other legal considerations.”
Plahotniuc was arrested on 22 July in Athens while attempting to board a flight to Dubai, with the arrest facilitated by information from Interpol’s office in Greece. As a former lawmaker and one of Moldova’s wealthiest individuals, Plahotniuc is a key suspect in the notorious “theft of the century,” which involved the disappearance of $1 billion from the Moldovan banking system in 2013—an amount that represented 12% of the country’s GDP at the time. In 2023, the European Union imposed sanctions on seven individuals from Moldova, including Plahotniuc, citing their actions as detrimental to the territorial integrity of both Moldova and Ukraine.
Plahotniuc’s return to Moldova comes just days before the high-stakes parliamentary elections on 28 September, during which the ruling pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) faces challenges in retaining its majority. Thus, his arrival in Moldova may have significant political implications for the country.
