On 8 July, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen articulated Denmark’s objectives for its upcoming six-month term as the EU Council president during a debate with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). EP President Roberta Metsola welcomed the Danish Prime Minister, emphasising that Denmark assumes the presidency at a pivotal juncture. She underscored that the slogan, “A strong Europe in a changing world,” aptly reflects the current needs of the European Union.

President Metsola highlighted Denmark’s capability to lead effectively and expressed the Parliament’s readiness to collaborate on a wide range of issues, particularly stressing the significance of the forthcoming EU long-term budget.

In her address, Prime Minister Frederiksen identified the unprecedented international challenges facing the EU, including geopolitical and economic competition, as well as increasing levels of conflict. She asserted that Europe must take ownership of its security by enhancing investments and strengthening its defence industry, to enable the EU to ensure its own defence by 2030.

In light of the military threat posed by Russia, Frederiksen emphasised the necessity of continued support for Ukraine in its pursuit of peace and freedom, noting that such support is not merely altruistic but also serves to fortify the EU’s own defences.

Concerning migration, the Prime Minister recognised that citizens expect innovative solutions from Europe. She called for measures to strengthen the EU’s external borders, reduce the inflow of migrants, and streamline the return process.

Furthermore, Frederiksen stated that establishing a competitive and environmentally sustainable Europe is increasingly essential, as the continent risks falling behind globally. Addressing the climate change and biodiversity crises, she advocated for promoting a global green transition. She called for a prompt agreement on an ambitious EU climate target for 2040, which would demonstrate leadership and provide predictability for businesses.

Regarding the EU’s upcoming long-term budget, Frederiksen expressed her support for increasing its flexibility, simplifying its structure, equipping it to address unforeseen challenges better, and aligning it more closely with the EU’s political priorities.
