On Tuesday, Moldovan President Maia Sandu addressed Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Strasbourg, focusing on the significant threats to democratic values. During the session, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola commended President Sandu for her determination, courage, and steadfast commitment to the people of Moldova, stating that the EU stands united in its support for Moldova and its democratic path toward European Union membership.
In her speech, President Sandu underscored the importance of the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova, scheduled for 28 September, which she said are the most consequential in the history of the country. She articulated that the results will determine whether Moldova advances as a stable democracy or encounters the risk of being influenced away from Europe by Russian forces, potentially positioning Moldova as a strategic threat on Europe’s eastern frontier.
President Sandu conveyed the notion that Moldova’s experiences should serve as both a lesson and a poignant warning: “If our democracy cannot be protected, then no democracy in Europe is safe,” she emphasised.
She further discussed the EU accession process, illustrating that many countries currently in the European Union faced similar challenges before they joined the Union. These nations overcame authoritarian regimes and economic difficulties, underscoring the importance of solidarity and support during such transitions.
For Moldova, the path to EU membership represents not merely a procedural endeavour but rather a critical opportunity to fortify its democracy within a protective framework against the looming threat posed by Russia.
With the parliamentary elections on the horizon, she highlighted the urgency of addressing Moscow’s extensive hybrid warfare tactics, which have escalated significantly since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
She highlighted that the Kremlin’s objective is clear: “to influence Moldova through electoral manipulation, to leverage us against Ukraine, and to transform our territory into a launchpad for hybrid attacks on the European Union.”
Concluding her address, President Sandu emphasised the significance of the forthcoming elections. “By safeguarding this electoral process, we do not only protect Moldova but also contribute to regional security and stability. While Moldova may serve as a testing ground, Europe remains the ultimate target,” stated the President of Moldova. She urged that the path forward necessitates a robust defence of our democratic values, highlighting the importance of collective action.
