A recent Eurobarometer survey, published on 13 February in advance of the Munich Security Conference, indicates a growing perception among Europeans of the threats facing their countries in the current international landscape. A significant majority of respondents advocate the European Union’s involvement in strengthening defence initiatives, with many recognising the importance of investment in this area.
The survey reveals that over two-thirds of Europeans (68%) believe their nation is currently under threat. The highest levels of threat perception are reported in France (80%), followed by the Netherlands and Denmark (77%), and Cyprus and Germany (75%). Additionally, 42% of participants express concerns regarding their personal safety.
Trust in the EU’s capability to enhance security and defence remains strong, with 52% of Europeans expressing confidence in this effort. This sentiment is particularly pronounced in Luxembourg (76%), Portugal (74%), Cyprus (73%), and Lithuania (71%). Furthermore, nearly three-quarters of respondents (74%) either support the current level of EU defence investment or advocate for an increase in funding. Support for enhanced investment is notably high in Lithuania (80%), Portugal (89%), Finland (83%), Spain (80%), and Denmark (78%).
Security and defence have emerged as key priorities within EU space policy, according to 53% of Europeans, followed by environmental and climate considerations (36%) and the competitiveness and growth of European industry (31%). Moreover, a noteworthy 55% of younger respondents acknowledge the positive economic impact of EU space programmes.
The Flash Eurobarometer, launched in January 2026, assessed EU citizens’ sense of security, trust in the EU as a defence actor, and support for increased collective defence investment. It also evaluated awareness of EU space programs and identified future policy priorities. The results will guide the European Commission and support evidence-based policymaking, based on 27,292 interviews across the EU-27.
