President Metsola visited Latvia and met the leadership of the country

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola is making working visits to the European Union Member States to call on audiences, especially young people, to actively exercise their democratic participation rights in the election and get involved in shaping the EU’s future.

On January 12, 2024, Metsola visited Riga, the capital of Latvia, and met with the country’s political leadership.

Metsola met with the President of the Republic of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, at Riga Castle.

“Since day one of Russia’s aggression, Latvia’s support to Ukraine has been remarkable. Two years later, it is as strong as ever. Grateful for Latvia’s leadership,” Metsola posted on X.

European Parliament President also met with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa.

“The highest 🇱🇻 share of the population in history supports our EU membership and appreciates 🇪🇺 its benefits. We have been at the 🇪🇺 decision-making table for 20 years – let’s shape the future of Europe together @Europarl_EN in the elections on June 8!” Prime Minister of Latvia posted on X.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, received President Metsola and thanked her for her strong support for Ukraine and its aspirations of integration into the European Union. 

Referring to the historic decision by the European Council of December 14 2023, on the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, the officials agreed that concrete steps should be taken as soon as possible to approve the framework for accession negotiations and to convene an Intergovernmental Conference.

Kariņš and Metsola also discussed preparations for the election to the European Parliament, which will be held in Latvia on June 8 2024.
