Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has publicly disclosed that his personal data has been disseminated on the dark web, leading to concerns regarding threats and intimidation directed towards him and his family. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has attributed this incident to pro-Russian hackers.
Tajani made this announcement via social media following a series of hoax bomb threats that have impacted various locations across Europe, resulting in flight diversions, security alerts for broadcasters, as well as attacks on supermarket refrigeration systems and drone activations. He stated, “For days, cybercriminals have been spreading my personal data on the dark web and seeking additional information, thereby exposing my family and me to new threats.” He added that these individuals are actively seeking more personal details about him and his loved ones.
Premier Meloni expressed support for Tajani in a separate statement, highlighting the seriousness of the pro-Russian hackers’ activities and the implications of publishing personal data on the dark web. She described attempts to sell confidential information about government officials as a serious issue that requires urgent, decisive action.
While Tajani, who also serves as vice premier in Italy’s government, did not specify the type of information shared, he implied that the cyber threat remains active. He emphasised, “I will not allow myself to be intimidated in any way. I will continue to work diligently to defend my ministry and Italy, and I will further strengthen our collaboration to protect ourselves collectively.” Additionally, he reaffirmed the Italian government’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in light of these developments.
