European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, accompanied by leaders of the Parliament’s political groups, will visit Copenhagen on Tuesday to prepare for the upcoming Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. During this important visit, the leaders will engage with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and will be received by Their Majesties King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark. Additionally, discussions will take place with representatives from the Folketinget, the Danish Parliament.

The current geopolitical landscape, marked by the war in Ukraine, the climate crisis, and global trade tensions, presents significant challenges to the European Union’s ability to take decisive action. Denmark is set to assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU on 1 July, thus playing a crucial role in directing the future initiatives of the Union. It will hold the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU from July to December 2025, after which Cyprus will take over the presidency.

“Denmark takes the EU steering wheel at a time of war on our continent, global trade tensions and economic pressure. Security, sustainability and competitiveness are the right focus. From strengthening our defence to cutting red tape for business, from energy security to digital leadership – Europe must act. I look forward to working with the Danish Presidency to deliver,” says Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, ahead of the visit.

In anticipation of this transition, the European Parliament’s Conference of Presidents will convene in Copenhagen on 3 June. The Conference, which comprises the President of the European Parliament, leaders of the political groups, and a non-voting representative of the non-attached Members, traditionally visits the country of the incoming Presidency to engage in preparatory discussions. The objective is to establish a common understanding and facilitate collaborative efforts regarding the forthcoming priorities. The Conference will also provide a platform to discuss the priorities of the upcoming Danish Presidency with government officials and members of the Folketinget.
