On the eve of Moldova’s Independence Day, the country’s airspace was violated by five drones, and an additional drone was discovered within its borders. The Eastern European republic has become increasingly targeted by Moscow, particularly in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Kremlin regards Moldova as part of its strategic “Lebensraum,” considering its historical ties as one of the former Soviet republics. Nonetheless, Moldova has continually demonstrated its aspirations to join the European Union.
“On the night before Moldova’s Independence Day, our airspace was violated by not one, but five drones. A separate drone was also found on the ground in Moldova,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today in a press release.
“We have repeatedly warned about the unacceptable risks posed by Russia’s war against Ukraine. Yet another Russian attack on Ukraine has once again resulted in violations of Moldova’s airspace,” the Ministry stated.
“These incidents are another reminder of the need to strengthen our national security and our ability to protect our citizens,” the statement concluded.
In a separate statement, Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova, condemned this intimidating act.
“Hours before Moldova marks 35 years of independence, our airspace was repeatedly violated by Russian drones. I strongly condemn this intimidation. Moldova stands tall, independent and free, firmly on its path to join the EU.”
