French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday that he has directed his government to formulate a plan aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure, including sensitive defence industry sites, from the threats posed by drone attacks and cyberattacks. This action responds to what he described as a growing hybrid threat from Russia.
During a press conference at the Elysee Palace, following discussions with leaders of various political parties, Macron stated, “In recent weeks, the threat—particularly the Russian hybrid threat—facing France and Europe has intensified.” He specifically highlighted the risk posed by drone and cyberattacks against essential infrastructure.
The European Union defines Russian hybrid activities as encompassing sabotage, cyberattacks, disinformation, and interference in democratic processes. Macron cautioned that any aggression would not go unanswered and accused the Russian government of attempting to intimidate European nations into reducing their support for Ukraine.
He asserted, “We are not intimidated,” emphasising that the security of Europe, both currently and in the future, is contingent upon the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
Furthermore, Macron indicated plans to convene the Group of Seven (G7) meeting in the coming weeks to coordinate efforts in addressing the energy crisis. He linked the increasing energy prices to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Recognising the challenges of rising energy costs, Macron said he understands the difficulties many households face: “The situation is very difficult and distressing for many families.”
