Spain and the United Kingdom moved forward with a new cooperation deal to bolster their relationship in several crucial sectors, like economic growth and migration.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to London on Wednesday for the signing of the deal. The new bilateral agreement was the first to be signed after the two countries reached a deal over Gibraltar.

The small territory of the UK is located at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula, surrounded by Spain. Many workers crucial for the 34,000 town commute daily from Spain. Despite voting overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the European Union in 2016’s Brexit referendum, Gibraltar left the EU in 2020. After that, the status of Gibraltar has been in limbo, with both sides and the EU unable to find a solution for the post-Brexit situation.

Finally, in the summer, they reached an agreement that allowed people and goods to pass through the border between Gibraltar and Spain. The agreement opened a new chapter in the two countries’ relationship and paved the way for further cooperation deals.
