Far-right media in France and elsewhere are trying to promote a new image of the National Rally’s leader and candidate for the 2027 presidential election. Her propaganda machine suggests that Marine Le Pen is no longer anti-European and avoids any reference to her Russophilia. However, Marine Le Pen’s hatred of Europe, support and admiration for Vladimir Putin and occasionally for Donald Trump have never changed.
Celebrating the results of the referendum in Iceland, where voters rejected the EU path for their country, the far-right candidate highlighted in a post on X that “the Icelandic people have recalled an obvious truth: membership in the European Union is not the natural horizon for every European democracy.”
“This vote delivers a crystal-clear message: peoples must be able to decide for themselves their future, their institutions, and their capacity to defend their national interests,“ Le Pen continued, reiterating an old position of the far-right parties in Europe. Europe, for them, shouldn’t be a Union but a loose alliance of countries with their own currency, tariffs, and political systems.
“At a time when some are pushing for greater federalism and the transfer of sovereignty to the European Commission, this vote reminds us that another Europe is possible, an Europe of free, sovereign nations cooperating voluntarily on matters of common interest,“ the far-right candidate made clear how she imagines France under her presidency.
In a post on X, Benjamin Haddad, Minister Delegate for Europe, noted that “through this message, Marine Le Pen clearly demonstrates that her real project has never changed: the rejection of the European Union and Frexit.”
Famous writer Jacques Attali, also on X, emphasised that Le Pen’s message is “Exactly the message that Putin wanted to read. Unless he dictated it …”
