MEPs on the Committee on Development will take part in a three-day visit to Madagascar, starting on Monday 23 May.
The six-member delegation, led by Karsten Lucke MEP (S&D, DE), will assess the impact of, consequences, and government response to the famine in the southern Grand Sud region of Madagascar. The delegation will carry out a two-day field visit to this region, visiting school feeding and nutrition projects and rural development projects supporting smallholder farmers.
MEPs will also assess more generally the use of humanitarian and development assistance in supporting food security and resilience to crises induced by climate change and devastating droughts.
The delegation will meet with EU and member state representatives, as well as cooperation partners, government representatives and civil society organisations. It will also follow up on a resolution adopted in February 2020 by the European Parliament on the situation of child labour in mica mining in Madagascar.
