Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had a telephone conversation today with Chinese Premier Li Qiang to evaluate the current state of relations between the European Union and China, particularly as 2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. The discussion between the two leaders was constructive, allowing for a comprehensive review of both bilateral and global issues.
President von der Leyen highlighted the critical significance of stability and predictability in the global economy. In light of the considerable disruptions resulting from United States tariffs, she underlined the shared responsibility of Europe and China, as two of the world’s largest markets, to foster a robust and reformed trading system that is free, fair, and based on a level playing field. She urged for a negotiated resolution to the current circumstances, stressing the necessity of avoiding further escalation.
Moreover, President von der Leyen pointed out China’s essential role in addressing potential trade diversion resulting from tariffs, particularly in sectors already experiencing global overcapacity.
The two leaders discussed establishing a mechanism to monitor any instances of trade diversion and ensure that developments are adequately addressed.
The Commission President further reiterated the urgency of implementing structural solutions to rebalance the bilateral trade relationship and enhance European businesses, products, and services access to the Chinese market.
The dialogue also encompassed EU-China cooperation on the international climate agenda and the transition to clean industrial practices.
In conclusion, President von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s unwavering support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, asserting that Ukraine must determine any conditions for peace. She encouraged China to intensify its efforts to contribute meaningfully to peace.
Looking ahead, she noted that the forthcoming EU-China Summit in July will present an appropriate opportunity to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.
