Romanian Intelligence Service should assist the anti-corruption fight, says Romanian President

Nicușor Dan @NicusorDanRO

As corruption in Romania reaches unprecedented levels, President Nicușor Dan emphasised the urgent need to address this issue directly. He said the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) should prioritise the fight against corruption while ensuring that its mechanisms adhere to constitutional standards and maintain a clear separation from the Prosecutor’s Office.

In a recent interview with ProTV News, President Dan remarked that the SRI’s role is to provide reliable information, allowing the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate alleged corruption without further involvement from the SRI. This approach will be included in the upcoming national Security Strategy.

The President clarified that, according to legislation, the SRI can conduct interceptions only with a national security warrant issued by the High Court. Additionally, interceptions related to criminal investigations must be ordered by a judge and handled by the Prosecutor’s Office to maintain clarity in their roles.

Furthermore, President Dan highlighted that SRI officers are well-equipped to provide crucial information related to corruption, which can assist prosecutors due to their understanding of the social, political, and economic landscape.
