Trump’s administration still wants Greenland because not all NATO countries support US against Iran

On Tuesday, Richard Grenell, the US Presidential Special Envoy for Special Missions, stated that the United States have a strategic interest in Greenland, particularly in light of the lack of support from certain NATO allies for the US military actions in Iran.

“One thing is clear – @realDonaldTrump is absolutely right that we need Greenland. NATO members aren’t all with us on Iran,” Grenell wrote in a post on Platform X. “We need Greenland for U.S. national security purposes as soon as possible,” he highlighted.

Grenell, who was initially considered a prominent candidate for the position of US Secretary of State, has a background that includes engagement in preliminary discussions with Nicolas Maduro‘s regime in Venezuela before his role was somewhat diminished.

President Donald Trump has also expressed concerns regarding the positions of various NATO countries about potential military involvement in Iran. Notably, Spain denied the US access to jointly operated military bases for operations related to Iran. During a speech on Tuesday, Trump conveyed his disappointment toward the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer for their initial refusal to permit the use of the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean for military actions against Iran. He stated, “It was the strongest relationship of all. And now we have very strong relationships with other countries in Europe,” while also directly criticising Starmer for not being more supportive.

In late February, Trump announced his intention to send a hospital ship to Greenland to provide healthcare services to its residents. However, authorities in Greenland declined this assistance.
