Péter Magyar plans to suspend broadcasts from what he calls a propaganda medium once his government is formed.

Péter Magyar, leader of the TISZA party and the next Prime Minister of Hungary, stated in an interview with Radio Kossuth that his government plans to suspend public media broadcasts and create new oversight institutions for media. He emphasised that the Hungarian government would not interfere with public media, stating, “Hungarians deserve media that conveys the truth.”

Interestingly, Magyar’s last appearance in public media was in September 2024. During his campaign, state media ignored him and never invited him to appear on public platforms. Following his interview, he was on public television M1, where he commented on the lack of media access despite the support of three million voters.

Magyar plans to suspend broadcasts from what he calls a propaganda medium once his government is formed. Emphasising the importance of truth in public media, he noted he has no desire for revenge, stating, “It’s about ensuring that everyone deserves media that conveys the truth.”

Magyar urged President Tamas Sulyok to announce the inaugural session of the National Assembly at an early date. He also accused the outgoing government of destroying documents at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defence.

He announced plans for a new media law and oversight institutions to ensure press freedom. Regarding the approximately €17 billion in EU funds frozen due to rule-of-law violations by Viktor Orbán‘s government, he said the funds, part of which is expected to arrive by August, would be allocated to improving hospital conditions.

In the recent elections, TISZA won a constitutional majority with 136 seats in the National Assembly. The Fidesz-KDNP coalition holds 57 seats, while the right-wing extremist Mi Hazank holds 6.
