NATO’s reaction to an attack against Poland will be devastating, says Rutte

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned to Russia on 26 March, emphasising that the alliance stands unwaveringly alongside Poland and all its member nations. He declared that in the face of an attack, NATO would respond “with full force,” ensuring that the consequences for the aggressor would be “devastating.” He stressed that this message must resonate clearly with Vladimir Putin and any others who contemplate hostility.

In particular, NATO’s eastern flank, which includes Poland and the Baltic states, is gripped by anxiety. Their worst fears concern the possibility that ongoing negotiations could yield a settlement favouring Russia. Such an outcome could empower Putin to rebuild his military might, posing a renewed threat to neighbouring nations in the foreseeable future.

Rutte’s urgent warning comes when President Donald Trump‘s recent return to power has unsettled the security dynamics that had governed Europe for decades. This shift has compelled European countries to seek greater autonomy in their defence strategies, investing boldly in new weapons systems to reduce reliance on US support.

During a meeting with Rutte at the White House, Trump expressed doubts about the fear that a peace settlement for Ukraine would cause Russian aggression against other nations. Rutte has previously cautioned that by the end of the decade, Russia might be poised to strike at European soil once again.

In response to these mounting pressures, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk committed to collaborating closely with Rutte to pursue lasting peace in Ukraine. He expressed gratitude for Rutte’s steadfast support and keen interest in the ambitious East Shield project.

In a press conference held after their meeting in Warsaw, Rutte lauded Poland for its robust defence spending, affirming its status as a “valued ally” that bolsters NATO’s eastern front. He insisted that this commitment must be crystal clear “to Mr. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and to anyone contemplating aggression against us.”

Tusk reiterated that a meaningful peace in Ukraine must guarantee the country’s full sovereignty, stating, “Only a just peace will furnish us all with a profound sense of security.” He thanked Rutte for his unwavering support and genuine interest in the East Shield project, noting its significance among Europe’s defence priorities.

“One for all, all for one! The NATO Secretary General confirmed full security guarantees for Poland, supported the Eastern Shield and joint Baltic patrolling, and pointed to Russia as the main threat to the entire Alliance. A secure Poland is the highest priority,” PM Tusk posted on X after the meeting.
