The EU leaders condemn the attack on Israel

On Saturday morning, Hamas militants launched a surprise attack with thousands of rockets fired and heavily armed groups into Israel’s south. European leaders condemned the attack and affirmed Israel’s right to self-defense.

“Strongly condemn the indiscriminate attacks launched against #Israel and its people this morning, inflicting terror and violence against innocent citizens. My thoughts are with all the victims. EU stands in solidarity with Israeli people in this horrific moment,” posted on X Charles Michel, President of the European Council.

In a statement posted on X European Commission, President Ursula von der Leyen said:

“Today, Hamas terrorists have struck at the heart of Israel, capturing and killing innocent women and children. Israel has the right to defend itself – today and in the days to come. The European Union stands with Israel. I spoke to my friend President @Isaac_Herzog and conveyed to him my full support to Israel in the face of today’s terrorist attack by Hamas. I reiterate that Israel has the right to self-defense. The EU mourns the victims of these senseless attacks and stands by Israel today and in the next weeks.”

“Horrified at the unfolding attacks on #Israel. We condemn the terror and violence waged against innocent people. My thoughts are with all those under fire, all the first responders, and those defending against these brutal attacks. Terror will never prevail,” posted Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament.

On October 7, 2023, Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, issued a Statement on behalf of the European Union on the attacks against Israel.

“The EU condemns in the strongest possible terms the multiple and indiscriminate attacks across Israel by Hamas and deeply deplores the loss of lives.

The EU calls for an immediate cessation of these senseless attacks and violence, which will only further increase tensions on the ground and seriously undermine Palestinian people’s aspirations for peace.

The EU stands in solidarity with Israel, which has the right to defend itself in line with international law in the face of such violent and indiscriminate attacks.

The EU recalls the importance of working towards a lasting and sustainable peace through reinvigorated efforts in the Middle East Peace Process”.
