Boris Johnson has been elected as the new Prime Minister in the UK following an internal vote within the Conservative Party.

The European Green Party reacted to the news.

“We take note of the Tory party membership’s election of Brexit’s biggest cheerleader Boris Johnson as the next Prime Minister in the UK. The approximately 120,000 Tories that voted in these elections lends a very fragile mandate and a series of ministerial resignations have already undermined confidence in Mr Johnson’s ability to hold the highest office in the land.  The British Parliament must now assert its power as the supreme legal authority in the UK and reject Boris Johnsons’ flippancy and casual disregard for the democratic process,” said the co-chairs Monica Frassoni and Reinhard Bütikofer.

“The European Greens are strongly against a No-Deal Brexit. Together with our colleagues in the Green Party of England and Wales, the Scottish Greens and the Northern Irish Greens, plus the 7 Green MEPs in the European Parliament, we encourage the British Parliament to rule out such a nightmare scenario that would cause lasting damage to UK-EU relations,” added Frassoni and Bütikofer.
