French President Emmanuel Macron remarked on Saturday that the US Supreme Court’s recent decision to invalidate tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump underscores the significance of the rule of law and the system of checks and balances in democratic societies. President Macron emphasised the need for a “logic of appeasement” in the current context.
While addressing attendees at the annual agricultural fair in Paris, he conveyed France’s commitment to continuing its export activities and expressed the importance of avoiding unilateral decisions. He also noted that France would evaluate the implications of the new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
The US Supreme Court’s ruling has marked a substantial setback for a key element of Trump’s foreign and economic policies, as it annulled tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
This decision particularly impacted several contentious import taxes, including a 10% minimum tariff on goods from nearly all countries, a 15% tariff on goods from the European Union, and punitive tariffs on imports from China, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. On Saturday, Trump announced that he will raise the temporary global tariff on imported goods from 10 to 15%.
