Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureşan (EPP/PNL) addressed the announcement by US President Donald Trump, asserting that economic isolation has historically failed to create prosperity, often resulting instead in increased poverty. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding European citizens and businesses from the repercussions of these unilateral US measures.
Mureşan stated, “In the last century, economic isolation has not fostered wealth; rather, it has led to poverty. While we do not seek to isolate ourselves from the United States, it appears that the current US administration is pursuing a path of isolation from the global community. This trade conflict initiated by President Donald Trump has implications for everyone, particularly affecting the US economy. Businesses and citizens in America will soon feel the adverse effects of this strategy, notably through increasing prices.”
As both an economist and a prominent member of the European Parliament, Mureşan serves as Vice-President of the EPP and Vice-President of the EPP Group. He highlighted that “the primary objective of the European Union is to protect our citizens and businesses from the impacts of these unilateral US measures to the greatest extent possible.”
Mureşan said, “Europe is a steadfast partner to the United States, and the United States is a vital partner to Europe. The real challenge arises from autocratic regimes, such as Russia, which may seek to exploit the current geopolitical situation. The US administration needs to acknowledge this dynamic to benefit all who value democracy, freedom, and economic development.”
Mureşan warned that Trump’s move risks constraining both the global economy and the United States.
