On 6 March, an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was forged between Baykar Technologies and Leonardo, marking a significant step towards pioneering unmanned technologies. This strategic agreement showcases both companies’ natural synergies and complementary strengths in the dynamic unmanned sector. At the heart of their collaboration lies a joint venture based in Italy dedicated to the innovative design, sophisticated development, seamless production, and dedicated maintenance of advanced unmanned aerial systems.

“With Baykar – says Roberto Cingolani, CEO and General Manager of Leonardo – we are creating a new reference player in unmanned technologies, which will play an increasingly central role in the future of Defence. Today, we are signing a new international alliance that marks a significant leap forward in unmanned systems, opening up new market opportunities, particularly in Europe.”

This partnership intends to merge Baykar’s cutting-edge unmanned platforms—renowned for their operational prowess in diverse global markets—with Leonardo’s rich expertise in mission systems, payload engineering, and Europe’s intricate realm of aerospace certification.

“As the global leader in armed UAV development, production, and export in the world, Baykar has always focused on pushing the boundaries of innovation in unmanned aviation,” said Selçuk Bayraktar, Chairman and CTO of Baykar.

The European market, poised for explosive growth over the next decade, is projected to reach an astounding $100 billion, encompassing an array of unmanned technologies such as sophisticated fighters, armed surveillance drones, and deep-strike drones.

“The defence industry is facing unprecedented challenges, such as unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, sixth-generation fighters, cybersecurity, and space. In this context, we are convinced that technological cooperation is both necessary and urgent to accelerate progress and ensure global security,” Leonardo’s CEO explained.

Both companies are at the forefront of developing and manufacturing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), high-tech electronic systems, versatile payloads, and integrated C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence) solutions. They also delve into artificial intelligence, cutting-edge mission systems, and space equipment, all while ensuring seamless interoperability within multi-domain operational ecosystems.

“Leonardo’s globally renowned capability in C4I systems and its advanced AI technology backbone make this collaboration even more impactful. This strategic partnership with Leonardo marks a significant milestone in expanding our technological footprint and strengthening our global presence. Baykar will combine ethical AI-driven technologies together with Leonardo’s immense capability in the AI technologies to develop next-generation solutions that will define the future of unmanned aerial systems. Together, this synergy will bring ultimate AI-driven air supremacy for the future,” Selçuk Bayraktar stated.
